6 Steps to Success for Your New Year Resolutions

You have a fresh, new year.

Take a look at your fresh, new year and observe what you

4. Write down the exact steps you need to take to reach your goals.

5. Learn any new skills you need to know in order to reach your
goals.

you learn to feel? You need lessons, guidance and help in
learning the necessary steps to take to open your heart and
feel your emotions.

Continuing education is the best investment you can make for

6. Follow through with the necessary steps and you will meet

Holiday Stress Relief: Improve Self Esteem

A reader recently asked me," "What can I do to increase my
self worth today? I am cute, smart, independent,
emotionally stable, 90% happy, fun but I have low self
esteem. What causes this condition and how do I move
beyond it?"

The cause of low self esteem is fairly simple. You learned
to see yourself in a certain way based on how others saw you
and related to you. The result is you do not feel enough
worth about who you are. Another way to say it would be,
you do not think that you are valuable enough based on
how you are rating yourself.

Low self esteem is not caused by any inherent quality you

Halloween Customes Transform Energy

As a shy child I loved Halloween. I could dress
up and become a hobo, gypsy or pirate. Somehow,
the costume magically allowed me to relax and
be myself. I could play and act silly with others in
ways that I could not without the protection of
the costume.

Later, as a young therapist, I found another benefit
from dressing up in costumes. I was struggling
with giving up my "good girl" conditioning and my
talk therapist suggested that I go as a brat for
Halloween. This was brilliant.


I hated brats, did not want to have anything to do
with brats. I judged brats. To me, brats were bad
and that was that. So, of course, going as a brat would
help me give up my self righteous attitude toward
others and it would help me embrace my inner brat
which needed to be expressed.

So I did exactly what my therapist suggested. I threw
a huge party in my new house and dressed up like a
7 year old brat. What fun! All night long I was a brat
to everyone with absolutely no guilt. I had permission
to stop being so sweet, kind, polite and sugary.

I transformed my judgment into healthy expression
in a hurry.

Can't Reach Your Goals? De-fang Your Inner Critic

Nature is Big Medicine

Yesterday I got a call from a man who was talking so fast;

I had to slow him down to understand what he was saying.
He was in a panic. The prescription medication he had taken
for many years was no longer working and his heart was
racing and he could not sleep.

I explained to him, “Medications do not get rid of anxiety;
they cover up your symptoms so you do not know you are
anxious. They fool you, instead of helping you. Your
anxiety got worse because it continued to generalize
and spread."

His story continued, "But I got really good at stopping
my anxiety attacks with Cognitive Behavior Therapy. When
the last one started in the parking lot, I said, 'Go on,
give it to me! I can take it.’ "

Unfortunately, his Cognitive Behavior Therapy treatment
backfired and fooled him into thinking he was overcoming
his panic attacks and he was not.

CBT can reinforce problems by getting you to think so
much that you can end up controlling yourself more,
not less. This is what happened to him, he was more
anxious and not less anxious.

"I said to him, if your body and nervous system are not
relaxed, you have not overcome your anxiety attacks.
You need to learn to relax your body and nerves.”

Bottom-line: MDs and talk therapists do not have strong
enough medicine to overcome the static in your nervous
system. You need Big Medicine, the kind that comes from
the land.

You need Mother Earth.

What Are You Thinking? Create Relaxation Instead of Anxiety

Do you know what you are thinking? Or do your
thoughts just happen without you being aware of them?

There was a famous study with the students from
Berkeley several years ago which showed that 95% of
their thoughts were negative about themselves. If smart
Berkeley students think badly about themselves, just
imagine what the rest of us think about ourselves!

If you stop to notice how your thoughts affect your
automatic nervous system you will be shocked. One
single thought can make you jump up out of bed as if
an alarm has gone off signaling an emergency that has
to be dealt with immediately or else something bad will
happen! This one thought creates a rush of adrenalin that
flows through your whole body sending shock waves
to every cell in your body.

Your brain is telling you there is an emergency and yet
there is no real emergency. Out of control, irrational,
racing thoughts can ruin your life causing you to experience
both chronic and surface anxiety.

The only way I know to gain mastery over your thoughts
is to pay attention to them. You need to become aware of
what you are thinking and sort through the ones that are
helpful and use the data to your advantage. The ones that
are alarmist and negative against the self can be tossed out
like rotten food in a refrigerator.

Notice your thoughts for better results.

Feel Before You Move

I recently met the only blind figure skater in the world. Yes, you guessed it, via twitter! He wrote a blog article called "living on the edge and loving it.” As some of you know my Internet radio show is called, Live on the Edge, which is a phrase taken from a testimonial I received from Jean Houston, Ph.D. in 1984 after I studied and traveled with her in the USA and India.

Living on the edge means letting go of control and discovering the parts of you that exist beyond your conscious mind. If you desire rich, full-bodied experiences while you are here on earth it is an exciting and worthwhile journey.

The rewards are many; you will find your much needed instincts, intuition, kinesthetic abilities, feelings, sensations, inner knowing and healthy energy flow.

In order to jump and spin on the ice, Stash Serafin gets into the movement with his body from the inside out. He stands still and feels what is inside of him and the energy he finds then leads him forward out into the world naturally.

This is the same body heart method I use to teach people to break free from knee jerk reactions which are ego based so they can sense their natural born center which is full of real power and authentic self esteem.

Easy Way to Improve a Skill

During a human potential workshop in NYC in 1983 I heard Jean Houston say that practicing a physical skill in your imagination is just as effective as practicing the skill in real life.

Since then there have been many studies validating this fact and some studies even report that visualizing the skill is better than practicing it in real life!

How often do you use your imagination skills to improve your performance or reach a goal?

In 1989, I took my local Philadelphia women’s softball team all the way to the Championship Win by practicing every night in bed to become the best pitcher in the league.

Last week via a twitter chat, Carrie Armitage a professional pianist and singer-songwriter from Canada and I were discussing visualization. Something she said, gave me an exciting new idea about an unusual way I can help people with unpleasant body memories.

Since I am always on the lookout for faster and more effective ways to help men and women release the trauma of having been sexually and physically abused, I was thrilled.

To help you use this ability more effectively in your life, I asked Carrie to explain exactly how she used visualization to unlearn what she calls “bad technical habits.”

Here is what Carrie Armitage said.

"I recently took a fairly lengthy break from playing the piano. What I found when I returned to the keyboard is that I wanted to play up to speed right away in order to be able to play the parts I was writing for my solo project. To keep that momentum I was developing bad technical habits with regards to my approach to playing the parts. To further complicate things I was also favoring my ring and pinky finger on my left hand due to an injury to the ulnar nerve.

When you play a part over and over again you develop a muscle memory. In effect, you can then play the part without even thinking about it, at great speeds. If you have reached this stage in performing a part, it is very difficult to change the technique you’re using to play the part. The only method I had ever really been taught was to slow it right down and do the hard work of recommitting the part to memory with the right technique. I have little patience for this, and coupled with my left hand injury, I also did not have the physical stamina for it.

I started using a visualization technique where I would go over the correct technique in my mind (where the muscle memory doesn’t exist) – and have found this to be very effective in correcting bad technical habits (incorrect fingering or hand position).

I had learned many years earlier of visualization for performance – where you can visualize hitting the high notes with ease or going over a performance in your mind so many times that you have already performed perfectly in abundance before you ever step on a stage. I thought it couldn’t hurt to try it at the macro-physical level – and, it works! Going through the movements in your mind appears to be as effective as physically practicing, and perhaps even faster because you don’t have the down time of making the mistakes." How Effective Are You?

"Effectiveness is the measure of truth" is one of
the major principles of Aloha philosophy.

I picked up the little pink booklet on Aloha
philosophy by Serge King when I was in Kauai
several years ago. At the time I was not happy
with the money I was making. So I eagerly read
every word looking for answers.

When I read this principle I was dumb founded.
My reaction was, "You mean to tell me, I am
not being effective because I am not being
honest? No way!" I simply could not wrap my
mind about this idea. Where could the lack of
truth be in my life?

Well, after a year, I began to see more clearly. I
was able to take responsibility for my lack of
money and see the places where I needed to be
more honest.

Sometimes the honesty has to do with your
emotional health and your purpose in life.

How truthful are you when it comes to standing
up for the vulnerable, emotional part of you?

How truthful are you in admitting that you are
scared when you are scared?

How truthful are you in admitting you need help?

These questions will get you started on going
deeper into your effectiveness. Effectiveness really
is the measure of truth.

When you are not being effective in any area of
your life. Seek ye your deeper truths.

What Green Gift Did You Give Earth Day?

What did you do that made you a greener person this year? Tell me. Post your comment below and feel proud of yourself. Earth Day is a day for you to celebrate your gifts to Mother Earth. Give yourself credit for what you did that made your home cleaner and healthier.

I had to think long and hard on what I did this year that made me a greener person. Growing up on a self-sustaining farm set me up for green and nothing but green.

I don’t have a car, never let water run down the sink while I brush my teeth and don’t use my air conditioning in the hot Philadelphia summers. Don’t get me wrong, I am reasonable; when clients arrive I turn on the cool air in my comfy office.

I can proclaim that this year I did not burn a single fire in my fireplace. I read a few years ago in the Sierra Magazine that wood burning was one of the worse pollutants. So sadly, I cut back my romantic, delightful fires.

This year I did not burn any wood. The dead wood I bought to center city Philadelphia from my NC farm in the back of my rental car is still sitting there in the bin.

For next year I plan to stop using the garbage disposal. Can anyone tell me a small, effective garbage transformer for center city living? It must not attract rodents.

Jones is one of the most powerful movies I have
ever experienced. It exposes a subject everyone
else wants to keep in the closet. Mental illness.

Young folks will not remember Connie Stevens,
the singer and starlet. However us older folks do.

How American society still treats people when they
have emotional problems and mental health
problems is horrific.

In older societies, intuitive, sensitive people became
the medicine woman, the shaman, and the Delphic
oracle for Alexander the Great.

Traditionally, the oracle at Delphi first belonged to
Mother Earth (Gaea) but later was stolen by Apollo.
This tells us everything.

Mother Earth is the keeper of sanity. Mother Earth is
the keeper of reality. Your relationship to her is the
difference between being sane and being insane.

We became anxious, depressed and crazy when we
lost our connection to Mother Earth.

Here are some thoughts about when a soul decides
to leave the material confines of the body and earth.

What I suggest may be true and it may not be true.
However keep an open mind and see if it fits you
and your experience.

I am comforted by the thought that the soul does make
the decision when to pass over and that nothing is a true
accident. The result is, I can relax and let my soul lead
the way.

My focus changes, my job is not to fret or be scared about
when I am going to pass over. Nope, my job is to listen
to my soul and follow.

So how do you listen to your soul?

Emotions are the pathway to your soul. Last week I was
sad about other people passing over. Sadness is a soul
quality, it is not depression. Sadness is a real emotion
that feeds the soul and makes life deep, rich and
meaningful.

The closest I have ever felt to another human being
was in deep, profound sadness. Soul to soul.

The energy of sadness needs to move through you to
nourish your cells and feed your soul. If you deny or
exaggerate your sadness it will cause you serious problems
in the future. This is because the sad energy will get
stuck somewhere in your body and create stagnation.

If you depress or avoid your sadness you create mental,
emotional and physical problems.

Are you meeting your oral needs?

Oral needs are one of your most basic
emotional needs. Oral needs are also
one of your most basic pleasure needs.

There are many wonderful behaviors and sensual
activities that can meet your pleasure and oral needs.
However, in terms of being healthy and good for you,
kissing is at the top of the list.

You can kiss the air, the mirror and someone else.
You can even make smacky sounds with your lips
like babies do. Try it now if you are alone or with
someone who loves you.

Tell them this is your New Psychology Prescription from

Anxious lips are cold, hard and sour.
Relaxed lips are warm, soft and sweet.
If you remove your anxiety out of kissing you will
have lots more fun and you will meet your
emotional needs too!
